We are constructing more desalination capacity than ever, but traditional single-stage membrane arrays dominate
Small increases to recovery come at the cost of higher biofouling, higher chemical consumption and shorter membrane life
Large arrays of isobaric ERDs also struggle to maintain consistent energy transfer, and introduce brine-feed mixing
FEDCO high pressure centrifugal pumps are used in thousands of installations, including some of the world's largest BWRO and wastewater reuse facilities, such as the Orange County's Groundwater Replenishment Scheme and Singapore's Changi NEWater Facility.
Our pumps are recognized for their high efficiency, efficient delivery and unparalleled reliability in the field. The table below summarizes the operating envelope for the MSS Series and MSD Series high pressure feed pumps. For lower pressure BWRO systems (up to 19 bar/270 psi) and for general service/pretreatment applications, we recommend using the SLP Series low pressure pump.

Interstage boosting is commonly used in brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO) to balance flux between multiple RO stages. This achieves more stable membrane performance and higher recovery rates.
Using a turbocharger for your system's interstage boosting needs avoids using additional energy, and saves CAPEX on a booster pump, motor and variable frequency drive. It is also highly compact and operates with close to zero noise and vibration.
Interstage boosting is an ideal solution to handling high recovery applications or variable feedwater quality. See the case study below to find out more.

The HP-HEMI is the latest generation of energy recovery device technology for large-scale reverse osmosis, consisting of a FEDCO HPB model turbocharger coupled to a motor. Unlike unlike a conventional turbocharger, the impeller driving the feed boost can be powered by a combination of hydraulic and electrical energy.
The HP-HEMI has three modes of operation:
- Passive: the motor is disengaged, and the feed boost powered entirely by brine energy.
- Motor-assisted: If brine energy is insufficient to power the required feed boost, the motor and VFD engage to provide additional boost pressure.
- Regenerative: If a regenerative variable frequency drive (rVFD) is used, this enables the generation of electricity when brine energy is more than required for the required feed boost.
Scale rendering of the largest HP-HEMI model, with a capacity of 2,800 m3/hr (12,000 gpm), consisting of a motor (left) coupled to a turbocharger ERD (right).
